Seminars

09/04/2014 - 09/04/2014
IEEC Weekly Colloquium – Stellar Tidal Streams as Galaxy Formation diagnostic
Barcelona, Edifici NEXUS, Desp. 201
Within the hierarchical framework for galaxy formation, merging and tidal interactions are expected to shape large galaxies up to the present day.
03/03/2014 - 03/03/2014
ICCUB Colloquia: Quarkonium with Effective field theories
Aula Eduard Fontserè
Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the sector of the Standard Model of particle physics that describes the strong interaction, deceptively simple to formulate but notoriously difficult to solve.
25/11/2013 - 00/00/0000
Colloquium – History of Quantum Chromodynamics
Aula Eduard Fontserè
In 1971 Gell-Mann and I introduced the color quantum number of the quarks. One year later the exact color symmetry group was interpreted as the gauge group of a new gauge theory, quantum chromodynamics.
28/10/2013 - 00/00/0000
Colloquium – Reading the Record of Ancient Impacts
Aula Magna
Debris from asteroids and comets continually bombards the Earth. Large impacts launch ejecta on trajectories that transport it thousands of kilometers from the impact site.
26/09/2013 - 27/09/2013
Seminar - Multifield Inflation: initial conditions and predictions
Facultat de Física
While the Planck data is in excellent agreement with the predictions of single-field inflation, our incomplete knowledge of high-energy particle physics naturally leads us to consider the possibility of multiple scalar fields contributing to inflation.
19/09/2013 - 00/00/0000
Cosmological Simulations of Galaxy Formation
Sala de reunions ICC-IEEC (V702I), Faculty of Physics, UB
We present a suite of simulated galaxies that match a wide range of scaling relations over a large mass range at z=0, and follow the evolution of these relations and confront them with observational constraints.
19/09/2013 - 00/00/0000
Searching for Dark Matter with radiotelescopes
Aula-seminari 325, Physics Faculty, UB
The axion is a cold dark matter candidate, theoretically motivated to solve the strong-CP problem. Axions spontaneously decay into two photons and also convert into photons in a magnetic field.
16/09/2013 - 16/09/2013
Seminar – Shape of clusters of galaxies as a probe of screening mechanisms in modified gravity
Facultat de Física
Several extensions of General Relativity and high energy physics intend to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe by including scalar fields as extra degrees of freedom.
10/09/2013 - 00/00/0000
Seminar – Correlating features in the primordial spectra, or, what was the inflaton?
Aula 507
What is the most we can ever hope to infer about the nature of inflaton if all we ever end up inferring from observations are correlation functions of the adiabatic perturbation $\mathcal R$? At the level of the two-point function, the answer is not as much as we'd like.
05/08/2013 - 05/08/2013
Colloquium - Inflation and cosmological perturbations (from fantasy to precision cosmology)
Facultat de Física (UB)
The idea that there was a period of accelerated expansion in the very early universe, inflation, was born more than 30 years ago. However, it was like a fairy tale until 1992 when a tiny temperature fluctuation was found in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation in the sky.
05/06/2013 - 05/06/2013
Seminar – Using Planck’s secondary temperature anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background to constrain Dark Energy
Facultat de Física (UB)
I will describe the constraints obtained by the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations of the Planck mission from the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) and the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effects.
16/05/2013 - 16/05/2013
Seminar – Stars as cosmological tools: from dark matter to modified gravity
Facultat de Física (UB)
The present accuracy in the modelling and observations of the Sun and other stars allows us to use them as laboratories of physics. In this talk I will first discuss how the capture of dark matter particles by low-mass stars may impact the properties of individual stars and the global characteristics of stellar clusters.
11/04/2013 - 00/00/0000
Colloquium: Imaging the Molecular Interstellar Medium of the Milky Way
Aula Eduard Fontserè
Star formation occurs within the cold, dense, molecular phase of the interstellar medium that is primarily configured into cloud structures. I will provide a broad overview of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Milky Way.
14/03/2013 - 14/03/2013
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations in the Lyman-alpha Forest of BOSS Quasars
Barcelona, Sala de graus Eduard Fontserè
I will describe the first observations of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the clustering of the inter-galactic medium. The analysis uses a large sample of high redshift (z = 2-3) quasars observed by the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) to probe the Lyman-alpha forest.
14/02/2013 - 14/02/2013
Chemical enrichment of Damped Lyman Alpha systems as a direct constraint on Population III star formation
Barcelona, Seminari DAM, seventh floor, Physics Faculty UB
Damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs) can be used to measure gas-phase metallicities at large cosmological lookback times with high precision.
